The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, abbreviated in English. CEFR is an international standard for describing language ability.

 Assessment Process

All courses and lessons require a comprehensive CEFR assessment test. On completion of the test you will receive your CEFR score. Courses and lessons will be determined by your A, B, C score.

The Pinstripe English Assessment Test consists of:

5 sections:

  • 1 compulsory grammar section
  • 2 optional skills-based sections to test listening and reading
  • 2 optional tasks to provide an example of the candidate’s writing and speaking

Candidates:

  • Are able to pause the test after completing each section, save their results and return later to complete additional sections
  • Are expected to attempt each assigned section, though they may skip any individual section

The 5 Assessment Test Sections:

Grammar Section

  • Compulsory.
  • Contains 100 multiple choice questions, which start at CEFR A1 and become increasingly more difficult, finishing at CEFR C1.
  • Provides you with a CEFR proficiency level.

Listening Section

  • Optional.
  • Contains 12 multiple choice questions based on an audio recording.
  • Has a 20-minute time limit that cannot be paused once commenced.
  • Provides you a result that supports the candidate’s CEFR proficiency level, or alerts you to a discrepancy with it.

Reading Section

  • Optional.
  • Contains between 9 and 12 multiple choice questions based on a written text.
  • Has a 20-minute time limit that cannot be paused once commenced.
  • Provides you a result that supports the candidate’s CEFR proficiency level, or alerts you to a discrepancy with it.

Writing Section

  • Optional.
  • Contains 1 question to which the candidate must provide a written response.
  • Has a 15-minute time limit that cannot be paused once commenced.
  • Provides you an example of the candidate’s writing that may assist you to determine the CEFR proficiency level.

Speaking Section

  • Optional.
  • Contains 1 question to which the candidate must record a spoken response.
  • Has a 5-minute time limit that cannot be paused once commenced (although the candidate can re-record their response within the 5 minute time limit).
  • Provides you an example of the candidate’s speaking that may assist you to determine the CEFR proficiency level.

Collaborative learning experience 

All lessons are sent to students to prepare before joining an online class.

During the online class, students are encouraged to talk about what they have learned and have discussions to reinforce what they have learned in a social environment, aimed at correcting pronunciation, build speaking confidence, and listening comprehension.

After each online class a homework assignment is sent which will be marked by one of our tutors.
